From Idea to Install — How a Project Actually Goes

What happens from the first call to install day — an honest map of the four-week process.

Primewood 5 min read

A lot of makers promise “two weeks and done.” In reality, quality custom furniture making takes four to five weeks. This guide is a detailed map of what to expect from the first call to install day.

Week 1 — meet and measure

Day 1-2: first call / message

The initial conversation — what you need, the space you have, the budget range you’re working with. 15–20 minutes by phone or WhatsApp. No numbers get committed yet — we’re just trying to understand the project.

Day 3-5: on-site visit

We come to you in person. We measure the space — a laser distance reader isn’t enough; we need millimetre precision because 3 mm of error later turns into a door that doesn’t sit. We look at the light, listen to your habits. We bring physical cabinetry material swatches (read about the difference between LDSP and MDF) so you see them under your own light, not a showroom’s.

End of week 1: design concept

Our take — in words plus 2–3 reference images. “Thinking anthracite + light oak accent + brass hardware.” No 3D yet — first we agree on the approach.

Week 2 — 3D design + quote

Day 8-12: detailed 3D

A detailed model in PRO100 or SketchUp — real colours, real hardware, real door structure. The project is flexible — you can move colour, lighting, hinge type. Usually 2–3 iterations until you’re satisfied.

Day 12-14: full quote

A detailed quote — board, hardware, fronts, edging, install, VAT. No hidden line items — strict rule. Once the price is agreed, it doesn’t change.

Week 3 — ordering + production

Day 15-17: deposit and materials

30–40% deposit lets us order materials. Egger board arrives in 5–7 days (common colours); premium Blum and Hettich hardware in 7–10. Rare decors — 2–3 weeks.

Day 18-21: cutting

The panel is CNC-cut to a 0.5 mm tolerance. A typical kitchen takes 1–1.5 days to cut. In parallel, edges are bonded with PUR adhesive.

Week 4 — hardware + install

Day 22-24: shop assembly

Hinges, drawer runners, AVENTOS mechanisms — all fitted in the workshop before delivery. That means on install day at your place, we’re only connecting finished modules, not assembling them.

Day 25-27: install at your place

A typical custom kitchen installation takes 1–2 days on site (for design and layout ideas, see kitchen colour selection and small kitchen design). We level the cabinets, join them, compensate for wall irregularities with an adjustable plinth, hook up appliances (cooker, dishwasher), fit the worktop, adjust every hinge.

Day 27-28: handover + final payment

You inspect — every hinge, every drawer, every mechanism. If anything’s off (rare) — we fix it on the spot. Final payment (60–70%) after acceptance.

What can stretch the timeline

Four weeks is the average. The following extend it:

  • Rare colour (a specialty Egger finish) — +1–2 weeks
  • AVENTOS / Le Mans / Magic Corner mechanisms — +7–10 days
  • Stone or ceramic worktop — +10–14 days
  • Standard hardware — usually no delay

What happens after install

Our rule — we stay reachable after handover. In the first 2–3 months:

  • Hinges drift slightly — we re-adjust at no cost
  • Your usage habits evolve — you may want a small addition
  • Walls settle (in new builds) — we tweak via the plinth

The 5-year warranty covers the build; manufacturer warranties cover the hardware.

Bottom line

Long? Yes. Real? Yes. A kitchen meant to last 15 years isn’t built in two weeks — and if anyone tells you otherwise, treat it with caution.
